This is precisely the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">question addressed by this trio of experts &#8211; BCE Special Ceramics GmbH, KRAMSKI GmbH and<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ZECHA Hartmetall Werkzeugfabrikation GmbH. Together, they are investigating innovative<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">approaches to injection moulding toolmaking.<\/span><\/p><p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Duos like Holmes and Watson or Batman and Robin complement each other with their different <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">abilities and character traits, making them particularly successful and, therefore, popular. \u2018The <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">situation is similar for the two materials ceramic and steel in mould making, except that this dynamic <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">duo is still more of an industry secret, unlike its popular role models,\u2019 smiles Stephen Rapp, Product <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Manager at ZECHA Hartmetall Werkzeugfabrikation GmbH. \u2018And we \u2013 BCE Special Ceramics GmbH, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">KRAMSKI GmbH and ZECHA \u2013 would like to change this in a joint project, because we see the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">potential for the injection moulding toolmaking industry and the entire sector to benefit from the greater <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">use of ceramics!\u2019 <\/span><\/p><p><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">KRAMSKI GmbH \u2013 high-tech from the \u2018Gold City\u2019 <\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">KRAMSKI GmbH in Pforzheim is a global solutions provider of cutting edge stamping and injection <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">moulding technology with approximately 700 employees worldwide. The company makes a significant <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">contribution to the profitability of its customers by focusing on precision and bespoke consultation. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">With its constant development of products and tool technology, KRAMSKI is meeting the challenges of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">tomorrow with its state-of-the-art toolmaking today. The company&#8217;s areas of activity include the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">mobility industry, power electronics, medical technology, telecommunications, energy and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">environmental technology, as well as various industrial applications. J\u00f6rg Carle, Technical Director of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">KRAMSKI GmbH: \u2018We produce around three billion parts a year to the highest precision, mostly plug <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">contacts for the automotive industry, but also very small, delicate parts for hearing aids or blood sugar <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">measuring devices and similar items in medical technology.\u2019<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Ceramic is not an unknown material at KRAMSKI, quite the opposite. \u2018Among other things, we use <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ceramic coatings for injection moulding tools, where, for example, material build-up can be an issue.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">That&#8217;s why we hope that the joint trials with BCE and ZECHA will enable us to use ceramic inserts <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">going forward, thus eliminating the need for the coating process,\u2019 J\u00f6rg Carle reveals. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Of course, wear is also a major issue in mould making \u2013 not least when using glass-fibre reinforced <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">plastics. \u2018Even if we are working with steels in the range of &gt;54 HRC, there is often a lot of wear, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">especially in the injection points area. This results in burrs forming on the component, which must be <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">avoided at all costs, especially since they lead to excessive maintenance on the operating equipment. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">For the 16-cavity mould that we want to optimise in the current project, we are planning to make one <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">cavity out of ceramic and use it for tests,\u2019 explains J\u00f6rg Carle. And an experienced ceramics expert <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">such as BCE Special Ceramics GmbH is the ideal partner for this.<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-main-rotation=\"0\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">BCE, the technical ceramics experts<\/span><\/strong><\/div><div data-main-rotation=\"0\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">BCE Special Ceramics GmbH is based in Mannheim and specialises in the production of technical <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ceramics. BCE uses state-of-the-art production and <\/span>measurement technologies and has been certified according to the currently valid standard DIN ISO 9001:2015 since 2001. Both the oxide ceramics aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and zirconium oxide (ZrO2) are processed, as well <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">as their mixed oxides ATZ (Alumina Toughened Zirconia) and ZTA (Zirconia Toughened Alumina). An <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">important part of the consulting service is to help customers choose the right material for their specific <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">application, taking into account the various manufacturing options. \u2018We don&#8217;t just blindly manufacture <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">according to customer drawings. Instead, we ask what the part is supposed to and must be able to do <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">when in use, and, above all, about the operating conditions. To this end, we first check the enquiry\u2019s <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">geometry and evaluate whether it makes sense to manufacture the component in ceramic in the first <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">place. If necessary, we will revise the geometry with the customer and then suggest a suitable <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ceramic. After all, the group of materials known as ceramics is just as diverse as plastics or metals. <\/span><\/div><div data-main-rotation=\"0\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">At <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">BCE alone, we can choose between about 20 types or qualities of ceramic,\u2019 explains Torsten <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Prescher, application engineer at BCE Special Ceramics GmbH. In addition, the company has <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">established full ceramic expertise at management level for over 10 years with a total of three material <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">scientists, all from the fields of ceramics and metallurgy.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pdf_asset_id_1807278195_page_3\" class=\"pdf-preview-page-wrapper with-margin\"><div class=\"react-pdf__Page\" data-page-number=\"2\"><div data-main-rotation=\"0\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">MARLIN 3D Laser Series \u2013 Machining ultra-hard materials<\/span><\/strong><\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The Marlin 3D series was specifically developed by ZECHA Hartmetall Werkzeugfabrikation GmbH for <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">demanding applications in the machining of sintered ceramics and hard metals. Thanks to the latest <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">laser technology, previously impossible tool geometries can now be applied to ultra-hard cutting <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">materials such as PCD and CVD. The use of lasers means that these geometries can be designed to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">be even more delicate, precise and complex. Greater efficiency is achieved by extremely accurate <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">geometrical tuning, which can be seen in excellent edge formation, precise dimensions and shapes, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">as well as in the outstanding surface quality of the component. Torus milling cutters, 6 mm in diameter <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and with 42 cutting edges, can be implemented within the MARLIN 3D laser series and are just one <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">example of the almost endless possibilities offered by laser technology.<\/span><\/div><div data-main-rotation=\"0\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2018Our MARLIN 3D milling cutters also offer significant advantages for the ceramics industry: for<\/span><\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">example, machining is no longer limited to grinding. Rather, we can now achieve mirror-like surfaces<\/span><\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">or intricate contours in the \u03bcm range by means of milling,\u2019 says Stephen Rapp. What is particularly <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">interesting in a project like this is that the tools can be seen in action in a specific application, making <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">things possible that offer the customer genuine benefits \u2013 such as longer tool life, but possibly also <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">reduced cycle times due to faster cooling of the injection moulding tool.<\/span><\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2018What I have seen of the MARLIN 3D milling cutters so far is impressive and has taken ceramic <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">machining to a new level. Since the majority of ceramics are non-conductive and therefore cannot be<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">machined by die sinking, milling in the sintered state represents enormous progress and opens up <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">new markets such as applications in mould making. We are having to completely rethink our <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">approach, moving away from grinding with diamond-coated discs to milling technology with defined <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">cutting edges, and we still have a lot to learn about the machining parameters in particular. But I have <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">great hopes for the performance of ZECHA&#8217;s MARLIN 3D tools,\u2019 says Torsten Prescher. J\u00f6rg Carle <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">also sees the use of ZECHA tools as a major advantage: \u2018If we can machine with \u03bcm precision to the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">highest surface quality on our milling machines, we will save a considerable amount of time and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ultimately money in the production of the mould inserts!\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Tapping even greater potential in mould making<\/span><\/strong><\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The three project partners are convinced: mould making offers significantly more potential than only<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">using steel. Through the targeted use of ceramic elements, tool life and process reliability can be <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">raised to new levels, leading to a clear knowledge advantage and increased efficiency. \u2018We are<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">excited about the development of this project and are sure that it will show us a new way of taking <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">modern mould making to the next level of evolution,\u2019 the partners explain in chorus.
